Not suitable for
Safer Choice

Finding cleaning and other products that are safer for you, your family, and the environment should be easy — that’s why the U.S. EPA developed a Safer Choice label. We all play a role in protecting our families’ health and the environment. Products with the Safer Choice label help consumers and commercial buyers identify products with safer chemical ingredients, without sacrificing quality or performance.
CLR and CLR Bathroom and Kitchen all wear the Safer Choice label to communicate that the product’s formula contain ingredients with more positive human health and environmental characteristics than conventional products of the same type. They are also biodegradable.
Frequently asked questions
-
We do not recommend using CLR to remove oil. If CLR mixes with oil on concrete, it will darken the surface, which is very difficult to remove. To remove oil from concrete or blacktop, we recommend using CLR Oil & Grease Remover.
-
We do not recommend using CLR to clean ice makers. The acids in the product are not compatible with the components of ice makers. Always refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations for safe and effective cleaning products.
-
CLR is not recommended for use in steam irons, steamers or steam machines. CLR is not compatible with the components of these items. Contact the manufacturer of your particular item for advice on suitable cleaning solutions.
-
If CLR was ineffective in cleaning the glass, the surface may be etched and there is no remedy to remove the cloudiness. The cloudiness is caused by tiny cuts made in the glass by deposits in the water. The only thing that may remove the etching is a jeweller’s polishing.
-
We do not recommend putting CLR in a spray bottle. CLR is acidic in nature and the solution could corrode the plastic container that you are using to hold the CLR. If you would like to use CLR in a spray bottle format where controlling the dilution is not important to you, try CLR Ready to Use in the 750 mL spray bottle.
-
Do not use CLR on any natural stone or marble (including cultured marble), terrazzo, coloured grout (any colour other than white), painted, coated, sealed or metallic glazed surfaces, food-grade or soft plastics, laminates, Formica, slate, titanium, rubber, aluminium, galvanised metals, nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, brass, copper, steam irons, leaded crystal, refinished tubs or any damaged or cracked surface. CLR may etch older sinks, tubs and tiles. Avoid contact with wood, clothing, wallpaper and carpeting. Some laminated surfaces (countertops) are coated with a synthetic surface which may be affected by rust removers; always spot test first on an inconspicuous area.
-
CLR can not only remove the finish off of brass, aluminium and copper, but can also pit certain grades.
